Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It makes up everything around us, including solids like rocks, liquids like water, and gases like air. Matter exists in three primary states: solid, liquid, and gas. In solids, particles are tightly packed and hold a fixed shape. In liquids, particles are loosely packed, allowing the substance to flow and take the shape of its container. In gases, particles move freely and fill any space available. Each state has distinct properties based on particle arrangement and movement. Matter can also change states through processes like melting, freezing, and evaporation.

Change In State Of Matter
Physical changes alter a substance’s appearance without changing its identity, like melting ice into water. Chemical changes, however, create a new substance, as seen when burning wood turns it into ash. In solutions, a solute is the substance that dissolves (like sugar), and a solvent is the substance it dissolves in (like water). Together, they form a solution, a uniform mixture where the solute is evenly distributed in the solvent.
