Common Noun & Proper Noun

A proper noun is the name of a specific person, place, animal, or thing. It always begins with a capital letter. For example, in the sentence "Ravi lives in Delhi," the words Ravi and Delhi are proper nouns. They are special names of a person and a place. Other examples of proper nouns are Ganga, India, January, and Sunday. Proper nouns help us talk about exact names.

A common noun is the name of a general person, place, animal, or thing. It is not the name of a specific one. For example, in the sentence "The girl is reading a book," the words girl and book are common nouns. Other examples of common nouns are boy, city, dog, table, and school. A common noun does not begin with a capital letter unless it comes at the start of a sentence.
